Some Useful LASIK Questions Answered

  • How do I know if I am a good candidate for LASIK Eye Surgery?
    If you are nearsighted, farsighted or have astigmatism, you may be a good candidate for LASIK eye surgery.

    In addition, if you are over the age of 18 with healthy eyes and no presence of retinal problems, corneal scars, or eye disease you will be suitable for LASIK eye surgery.

    To determine if LASIK eye surgery is right for you; your eye doctor will give you an evaluation.
  • How long does LASIK eye surgery take?
    LASIK eye surgery takes about five to seven minutes to complete each eye and about 15 minutes total for the entire procedure.
  • Are the effects of LASIK eye surgery permanent?
    Yes. The effects of LASIK eye surgery are permanent. After about a two to three month healing period, you will start to notice the effects of LASIK eye surgery on your vision.
  • Will I need reading glasses after I receive LASIK eye surgery?
    LASIK eye surgery patients over the age of 40 may need to wear reading glasses for magnification during reading (generally for fine print). Patients over the age of 40 tend to experience a natural weakening of the eyes (presbyopia). LASIK eye surgery will not correct or prevent presbyopia. Generally, a patient under the age of 40 will not need to use reading glasses.
  • How many follow-up visits will I need after receiving LASIK eye surgery?
    The day after you receive your LASIK eye surgery, you will most likely see your eye doctor for a follow-up visit. You next follow-up visits will be at least one and 3 months after the LASIK eye treatment. Some LASIK eye surgery patients will need more follow-up visits.
  • How Soon After The Treatment Can I Bathe or Take a Shower?
    You can bathe the same day as you receive your LASIK eye surgery. However, you should not shower for at least 2 days after the surgery. You should always avoid getting or water in your eyes and avoid rubbing your eyes during the first month after getting LASIK.
  • Can I drive after I receive LASIK eye surgery?
    You should not drive the day of your LASIK eye surgery. After the day you receive your LASIK eye surgery, your ability to drive depends on how well you are able to see.
  • How soon after receiving LASIK eye surgery will I be able to wear eye makeup?
    About two weeks after you have received your LASIK eye surgery, you can resume wearing eye cosmetics. Following LASIK eye surgery, you should purchase new eye makeup (especially mascara). Wearing your old eye makeup may make your susceptible to potential eye infections.
  • How soon after receiving LASIK eye surgery will I be able to exercise?
    You can resume non-contact activities as soon as you feel capable. If there is a risk of receiving an eye injury, you should wear protective eye goggles.
  • How soon after receiving LASIK eye surgery will I be able to swim?
    You should not swim for at least two weeks after receiving LASIK eye surgery.

  • Will I be given anesthesia during the LASIK procedure?
    No. Prior to starting the procedure, you will be given numbing eye drops. In addition, you may be given a mild sedative like Valium. No needles or intravenous anesthesia will be administered.
  • Will I be able to receive the LASIK procedure on both eyes at the same time?
    Yes. LASIK eye surgery can be performed on both eyes the same day. Although the procedure can be performed on both eyes the same day, you can generally elect to have the procedure done on one eye at a time (different days).
  • Will LASIK eye surgery hurt?
    The LASIK eye surgery will not be painful. Although the numbing eye drops will ensure the treatment is painless, you will feel some pressure on and around your eye during the LASIK eye surgery.


  • Will I experience any pain after the LASIK eye surgery?
    Following the LASIK procedure, you may feel some burning and scratchiness. The feeling of burning and scratchiness will dissipate about one to three hours after the surgery.


  • How soon after the surgery will I be able to see well?
    Although each patient’s sight is different, postoperative medications may make your vision blurry following the surgery. However, some LASIK eye surgery patients notice changes in vision as soon as they leave the surgery.


  • Will I have to wear an eye patch?
    No. you will not have to wear an eye patch, however, you will need to wear clear protective eye shields over your eyes after LASIK. In addition, you will need to wear protective shields on your eyes when you sleep for at least one week after surgery.


  • Will I need to wear contact lenses or eyeglasses after I receive LASIK eye surgery?
    The need to depend on corrective eye devices will diminish after receiving LASIK eye surgery. However, some LASIK patients will need to wear prescription glasses for night driving.
